The Steeldrivers « Reckless » Rounder 0624-2 (2010)
Steeldrivers’ singer (Chris Stapleton) left the group and his replacement, Gary Nichols, will be in Craponne. Stapleton, beside being a good vocalist, is first a Nashville songwriter. One can surely see this new group on YouTube. I prefer personnally the fiddle player Tammy Rogers (already seen in Nashville, and 2 times in Paris) and Mike Henderson, mandolin and, most of all, dobro.
Better sides of this hybrid bluegrass band : the powerful fast « The Reckless Side Of Me », the bluesy (great dobro) « Peacemaker », the lively classic bluegrass sound of « Guitars, Whiskey, Guns and Knives » and the haunting (fine vocal by Stapleton) « Ghosts Of Mississipi ». Buy it in confidence !
Tim Hus « Hockeytown » Stony plain (2010)
Tim is a Canadian honky-tonk singer, whose compositions are very promising and interesting. The instrumentation is of classic origin, even comprising accordion (« North Atlantic Trawler ») and the inspiration includes references to trucker’s culture (« Canadian Pacific »). Also noticed were « Picture Butte Charlie », classic honky-tonk sound, and the « Talkin’ Saskatoon Blues ». An artist to look for in the future !
Really enjoyed your site tonight. Very informative and great listening. One thing really amazed me though. Im’n not trying to be mean or anything. But you said on one post the you were not familiar with Loretta Lynn’s music. I am amazed that someone who obiviously knows a lot about country music would not be familiar with Loretta Lynn. The young lady you posted doing the tribute songs to Loretta Lynn was veery good, but you really need to listen to the original Honky Tonk Gal. I think you will really enjoy her. Thanks for a great night. I will return!
Jim, thanks for sending your comments. About Eilen Jewell it was clear from Xavier’s ex-
planations that he was doin’ the CDs reviews for me for a while. This is the only reason
why he said he was not familiar with Loretta Lynn’s music.
About Lynn’s version of ‘Honky Tonk Gal’ I have the original 45 in my collection and I
think that Jewell’s version can easily compare with it. Her tribute to Loretta Lynn CD is
a gem.
We are very lucky with so many young talents on the american roots music scene today
and we all can enjoy it.
Hello,
This is a message for Jack Dumery. I don’t have a phone # for him, but I’m trying to contact him to let him know that his songwriter friend, Benny R. Williams, from Nashville, TN, died a few days ago.
Would someone please pass this message on to him? He can contact me at 615-692-9946 for more information about the arrangements.
God bless you,
Suzanne Blackwood
